Surface finish of alumina ceramics

02.27, 2023

In order to improve product accuracy, most alumina ceramic materials require further finishing after the sintering process to achieve a higher surface finish. Alumina ceramics, however, are no ordinary material. How can you do it better?

Due to the higher hardness of alumina ceramic materials, it is necessary to use harder abrasive polishing brick materials, such as silicon carbide, B4C or diamond. In addition, the surface lubricity of alumina ceramic materials should be improved in advance during the polishing process. In the fine processing of alumina ceramic materials, the more common method is from coarse to fine grinding step by step, and then polishing the surface. Al203 micropowder or diamond slurry less than 1μm can be selected for grinding and polishing. Of course, laser processing and ultrasonic processing can also achieve the purpose of grinding and polishing alumina ceramics.

The above finishing treatment is performed to improve the surface finish of the alumina ceramic material, followed by treatment to improve the mechanical strength of the alumina ceramic, namely the alumina ceramic strengthening technique. In fact, advanced technologies such as electron beam vacuum coating, sputtering vacuum coating or chemical vapor deposition are used to toughen alumina ceramics. In these ways, alumina ceramics can be coated with a silicon compound film, and alumina ceramics can be toughened only by heating at 1200-1580℃. It has been proved that the mechanical strength of the enhanced alumina ceramics can be greatly improved on the basis of the original alumina ceramics.
